There’s a moment that happens, usually in the first few days.

Your senior rescue is asleep in their new bed. Or curled in a patch of afternoon sun on the floor. They look peaceful. They look safe.

And then it hits you.

You don’t know their history. You don’t know what they’ve been through, or what they’re feeling, or whether that little cough means something or nothing. You just know you love them already. Completely. In the way that sneaks up on you before you’ve had a chance to prepare for it.

And that love, as deep as it is, brings something with it that nobody really warns you about.

I know that feeling. I’ve lived inside it.

My name is Julie. I’m a dog mom, a writer, and someone who has loved senior rescue dogs through every stage of their golden years, including the hard ones.

I didn’t grow up with dogs. I had to learn everything the slow way.

My husband Mike did, so he had a head start on me. I came to it late, learning everything slowly — through love and instinct and more middle-of-the-night worry than I’d like to admit.

My first three girls, Madison, Molly, and Pepper, were with me for fifteen years. We went through heart disease, cancer, surgeries, and every difficult thing that comes with loving an animal all the way through their life.

When my last one passed during surgery, I sat in my car and told myself I was done. That I couldn’t open myself up to that kind of pain again.

But grief has a way of making room for love, whether you feel ready or not.

Somehow, I believe my three angels sent me my next three miracles.

What I've noticed after years of talking with senior dog owners.

Most of us aren’t struggling because we don’t care enough.
